Behind the Model: Decisions & Details — Questions for the People Who Build Them
Share
Kai is planning an upcoming conversation with Mr. Shunsuke Watanabe, Head of the Development Department at Make Up Co., Ltd.. As the head of development at one of the benchmark brands in today’s resin model car industry, Mr. Watanabe will share insights from the front line of development and mass-production—decisions and details that “only people on the inside” truly know.
This time, we’d like to hand the microphone to you:
What have you always wanted to ask a model maker—something that’s never been explained clearly?
Leave your question in the comments. We will curate the submissions, bring selected questions to Mr. Watanabe, and share the answers in a follow-up post.
What can you ask?
There are no strict limits, but we strongly encourage questions that (1) only a development professional can realistically answer, and (2) are useful to most collectors. Here are a few directions to inspire you:
1) Development Process
・What are the key milestones from project start to final shipment?
・How do you balance accuracy, engineering feasibility, cost, and production stability?
・Which “small” details actually have the biggest impact on the final look and feel?
・How do you decide part separation? Is “more parts” always better?
2) Quality & Yield
・Which stage most commonly causes defects, and how can they be reduced at the source?
・What issues may look minor but are genuinely difficult to eliminate completely—and why?
・Why does orange peel happen so easily on metallic paint finishes?
3) Licensing & Brand Strategy (Past / Present / Future)
We also welcome higher-level questions, for example:
・How was Make Up founded and positioned? What were the key decisions that shaped the brand?
・Why was Make Up able to secure the Ferrari license back then—and what led to the decision to let it go later?
・After recently securing the McLaren license, what has changed from a development perspective? What are the new challenges?
・Looking ahead, are there plans to expand licensing to more brands/models? What would you prioritize?
4) Industry Perspective & Observations
・What have been the biggest changes in the resin model industry over the past years?
・In your view, what will collectors care most about in the next 3–5 years—and how will makers respond?
Questions we don’t recommend (not because they’re “bad”)
To keep the content broadly useful, we generally won’t prioritize:
・Questions that are overly specific or restricted by confidentiality (e.g., “Can you do this exact color on this exact model?”)
・Questions that already have many public answers, or are difficult to answer with a clear conclusion
How to submit your question
Please comment using the format below:
[Your name / nickname]:
[Your question]:
[Optional background]: e.g., what scale you collect / what you collect / where your curiosity comes from
We recommend one question per comment. The more specific (and meaningful), the better.
Comment display & selection
To keep the comment section readable and high-quality, comments will be set to “approved before published.”
We will select a portion of submitted questions to display publicly and bring them to Mr. Watanabe.
Please note:
・General questions, or questions that already have plenty of public answers, may not be selected for display.
・Questions we were already planning to ask may also not be duplicated in the final comment list.
・We will read every submission, and we’ll do our best to address recurring themes through different formats in the follow-up content.
If your comment doesn’t appear, it doesn’t mean your question wasn’t valuable—only that we’re curating for clarity and information density.
Deadline
Submission deadline: January 25, 2026
We will publish a curated Q&A and conversation summary afterwards.
Thank you, as always, for supporting Kind of Blu.
We hope this exchange helps explain the real process and constraints behind model making—
not to mythologize the craft, but to better understand where those details come from.
Kind of Blu
Kai

Although Make Up’s 1:18 scale models demonstrate excellent craftsmanship, their market response has consistently trailed behind the 1:43 line. What strategic adjustments do you envision for this product line to enhance its market appeal?
Are there any plans to revive the release of assembly kits for collectors?
mu会不会以自己的优势开拓新的产品线,比如全开,场景
mu目前新车开模是使用真车扫描还是手动建模?新模具样品分件如出现参差怎么调整比例,样品定模标准是怎么样的?
